Gusty was pretty new to the area; she was looking for a place to call home and figuring things out, so that was the reason she was drawn to the bonfires. She looked into the fire and let her thoughts wander. Darkness had fallen, and she grumbled a little; she was a bit of a grump at times. She wasn't hateful, just pragmatic, really. She didn't have any friends to speak of, but she secretly hoped to find a friend. She didn't want to admit the weakness; she really didn't like weakness at all, but it was something she was stuck with. She looked up from the fire to see if any others were coming near the fire. She wouldn't say as much, but she wanted company. The stars above seemed like they were saying something, but she had no idea what it was they were saying. She sighed out deeply as she turned back to the fire, trying to open herself to the night and what this season might mean. She didn't want to miss something in the fire or on the wind.

Charlamagne sighs, slowly traveling in search for a bonfire she could possibly join. The small mare felt odd doing this. Yes, it was a seasonal tradition, but not one that she would normally participate in. Usually, she would just make gratitude trees with her family. Now though, all her children are adults and living their own lives and her mate has gone off, yet to return. So she didn’t have any family to celebrate with. It was part of the reason why she was seeking out a bonfire in the first place, having some thoughts to process and hoping speaking them to others will help clear her head. Eventually, she finds a bonfire that didn’t seem too crowded- slowly approaching to find a spot to lay next to it. After a bit longer, she locates one spot next to one mare that seemed to be unoccupied. Slowly, she approaches the mare, softly asking. “Excuse me… is this spot taken?” She motions to it with her head. Word count: 166

Gusty looked over her shoulder at the soquilli who asked if the spot was taken, and she shook her head and said, "Nope, not taken." She nodded in greeting and then said, "I'm Gusty," introducing herself. She wasn't a super cheerful soul; she never had been, but the bonfires gave comfort and helped her to think. Which was nice; she really liked the fall season it was much better to her than the summer. Summer was too long and too hot for Gusty to deal with, so she was glad that summer was coming to an end and bonfires and changing leaves were in their future.

Charlamagne gives the other mare a small, but genuinely, warm smile. “Thank you very much, I appreciate it.” She gives Gusty a bow of her head, before moving and settling herself in the once unoccupied spot. Once down and comfortable, she takes a quick glance around the bonfire before looking back to the other mare. “It’s nice to meet you, my name is Charlamagne.” She introduces, nervous, but still as friendly as ever. After giving each other their names, she looks around the bonfire again- silently watching those around. Quiet for a moment as she digs idly at the ground, nervous and awkward. A few minutes of this pass before she’s looking back to Gusty. “I’m sorry… I’m sort of new to this tradition. Do we just speak our mind? Are there turns to take? Like. . . Is there any certain protocol?”WC: 143 Total count: 309

Gusty shook her head and said, "I don't really know the tradition well either, but I think it's about talking things out, remembering stuff. Maybe it's a fall thing, and fall and fire sometime have to do with spirits and memories, I think." She said, thinking things over as to what this meant. "I don't think it matters all that much as long as we come together and just enjoy the night." She said, her tone a bit awkward. She wanted friends, but she was also trying to figure out how to talk to others in a not grumpy way it wasn't always easy.

Charlamagne’s tail flicks softly, humming softly. “Oh? Is that so? I’m sorry for putting you on the spot then, I thought you’ve done this before.” She bows her head apologetically to the other mare, the smallest frown on her face. She looks around one more time silently, then back to her current company to listen to Gusty explain her beliefs on how it might actually work- giving a curious tilt of her head. “Is that true? Well, in that case… would you like to say your mind first? It’s only fair, since you were here first. It also seems like you have some things you’ve been thinking about since I’ve gotten here. Go ahead, I don’t mind waiting.” She smiles warmly again, motioning with her head to encourage the other to say what she wanted to say and waiting patiently for her. WC: 142 Total count: 451

Gusty shook her head again and said, "Hey, don't think about it that way." She thought about what she wanted to say, and she said, "Well, I guess what I want to say is that I hope things will be better this year, full of a lot more than I had in years past." She turned to Charlamagne and said, "What about you? What are you looking for?" She was a grumpy soul, but she was trying to do something different with her life. She couldn't hold onto the past forever. She looked back into the flames, thinking of everything she had and everything she wanted. Gusty loved the bonfire it was nice, and it gave her comfort as the night got a little colder. She also didn't mind the company of Charlamagne being there.

Charlamagne was still, being quiet as she listens intently to Gusty while the other mare expressed her concerns and wants for the year. After she finishes, she gives her a comforting smile. “That’s always a nice wish. I hope it comes true for you.”When she was asked what she was looking for, she goes quiet for awhile- simply looking ahead at the bonfire. It was a few moments, taking in a deep breath before saying. “I’m looking for family.” She pauses, then shakes her head at that. “Well, no… not really. I have a family.” Her eyes focus on the flames for a moment, trying to make sense of her thought process and everything that was running through her mind. “I have grown children, who now have children of their own, and so on. I even have. . . had? . . . A mate.” At this conflict, she stops again to think. A frown finally takes over the smile she always seemed to have, letting out a sigh. “I don’t know what to do. He left in search of someone one day, but then, hasn’t returned in years. I am sure he is fine, but I can’t help but worry that something might have happened to him. So now, I’m not sure if I should continue to wait for him to return, or if I should move on.” Realizing she was rambling, Charlamagne bowed her head. “Oh, I’m sorry Gusty. I didn’t mean to dump all that on you, but that’s what’s been on my mind. So I guess, I’m looking for a sign or hope for him to return.”WC: 272 Total count: 723

Gusty ignored the part about her and turned her attention to the matter at hoof. "Forget about that and tell me more about whether he loved you or would just ditch you with a broken heart... and I know you don't want to think about it, but maybe he can't come back, or some magic is keeping him away." She was thinking that Charlamagne was holding on to hope that wasn't there. She wanted to know more before she discouraged them from holding on to hope. She looked into the fire again, wondering if there was a reason to hold on to hope or if most things were really hopeless and you just had to power through them the best you could and get on with life.

Charlamagne’s eyes go wide at the implication that her mate didn’t love her, emphatically shaking her head. “Ed wouldn’t ditch me, especially not after years of being together and having two batches of foals together. It wouldn’t make any sense to wait so long if his goal was just to bail.” She replies confidently that she knew her mate well. That certainty falters a little at what was said next. “That’s the thing. I know Ed. He’s bull headed and stubborn, so he would do whatever it took to get back to me and our family. But… I worry that something might have happened that kept him from doing that… permanently. And what if I do decide to move on and find someone new, and that’s when he finally makes it back… he would probably feel so betrayed.” She goes quiet, looking down as her worries flood her thoughts. A particularly loud crackle of the flame pulls her out of it, looking around then to Gusty. “Oh… I’m sorry for rambling. I’m sure you didn’t come here to hear all that mess.”WC: 182 Total count: 905

Gusty nodded, listening, understanding losing those one cared about. "Hey, don't say that. You aren't rambling; I think you are doing what this gathering is supposed to be about." Opening up and leaning on another seemed like the right thing to do to her. "I know it's not fair, but you might have to honor him and let him go." She tried not to be harsh, but she knew it was going to come across as harsh, since if the male loved her and her kids so much and hadn't been seen in years, Charlamagne had to face the fact that he might never come back.
