Ash Wednesday is here! Do you plan on performing a fast for Lent?
In 2023 I fasted from fast food. In 2024, health issues kept me from fasting. However, in 2025 I fasted from chocolate, which was super hard for me. But I succeeded! heart
This year, I'm intending on fasting from red meat throughout Lent and from all meat on Fridays.
What about you? Do you participate in Lent?

That’s great you succeeded in your fast! My Italian side of the family is Catholic so they don’t eat meat on Fridays either. I don’t participate personally, but only because I wasn’t raised in the tradition and I don’t know of any scriptural basis to start adhering to it. 3nodding

I'm also not Catholic. But - why not do it? That's my thought, at least. Not that you have to do it. It's just something I've decided to do myself. I feel it brings me closer to Him, and that's the ultimate goal. For me, at least. It's not about ritual or tradition. It's just about me and Him. heart

I think some Anglicans also do lent? I don't have a reason not to really, but I also don’t find I’m personally drawn to it either. That’s wonderful that you draw close to Him in it, that’s the best reason. ^^
I think if I was to implement anything I would love to do the feasts Jesus also took part in. We used to go to a church with a couple Messianic Jews and they would host a Seder every year. I also did a passover feast with a group of friends once while I was in CA and it was a really wonderful experience.
I just love the idea of participating in the feasts God instituted for His chosen people with the understanding we now have in Jesus! heart

I am glad that you are open about Lent in an encouraging manner. I've been told not to observe Lent because it's "a man-made holiday". And I know of Christians who are super "only do Jewish feasts and holidays - no Christmas, no Easter, no Lent" people, but I find all of this legalistic and completely contrary to what Paul says about people choosing which days to observe and what to eat (Rom. 14 and Col. 2).
We must choose what is spiritually beneficial to us. Any day that is required is slipping into the legalism that Paul warned about, which is why I do not observe Lent out of tradition or requirement but because I find the discipline brings me closer to Him. And that - that is enough.

Lent is coming to a close!
Some reflections I've had during my participation:
1. As you might already know, the Lent fast is based around Jesus' fasting in the wilderness for 40 days. But Lent is actually longer than 40 days, because people usually take Sundays off - recognizing Sunday as the Lord's Day, a mini-celebration of resurrection. I did not know this. In previous Lent fasts, I did not take Sundays off. That was the case this year, too. I did not take Sundays off, but I now know of and understand the practice, and I appreciate it. Probably won't take Sundays off in the future, though. It's just a continuous fast for me up until the day I celebrate that tomb being empty!!!! whee
2. I highly encourage participating in Lent, not because it's required but because it is very spiritually beneficial. It does not have to be required by Scripture to be helpful. Intentionally planning my Fridays to accommodate for a lack of all meat (yes, even fish) meant being acutely aware of what I was giving up, which forced me to focus all the more on prayer and gratitude. And every time I craved something that I could not have, I used it as an opportunity to stop and thank the LORD for what He had given me and what He had done. This is an excellent annual Christian spiritual discipline baked into the calendar right around one of the most important times of the year for every Christian.
3. I'm thinking of continuing to give up all meat once a week henceforth. Probably not on Fridays. Maybe on Mondays. I'm open to suggestions.
4. The Lenten fast has inspired me to consider a monthly fast where I fast from something different each month for the first full week of the month. The goal is a spiritual exercise that will help me to be thankful for what I have given up.
These are just my reflections. You don't need to respond. But I hope you will consider participating in Lent next year if you did not this year. heart
God bless you. The day on which we remember His sacrifice draws nearer. I'm excited and emotional!
