The Calling (10) : A beautiful melody drifts on the air from somewhere far away. The vocals are in a language you don't quite recognize, but feel somehow familiar to you. Something about the song calls to you, but no matter where you go, the song seems to sound the same distance away. The longer it goes on, the more emotional the song becomes--and the more emotional you become. Something about the song is possessive and consuming, like it's all you can think of. Something resonates in you as the song crescendos, and the feeling is at its strongest--be they good, bad, anything, but suddenly the song fades, and there's only an emptiness inside of you. The feeling of loss is strong, and can leave someone feeling emotionally numb. Someone out there was calling to you, and you couldn't find them.
It took a while for the sound to penetrate past the concentration. Trey was so busy with his work that, at first, his mind dismissed it as part of the background hum. Not that there was much of that any more, hours after everyone else had clocked out for the day and gone home. His dinner sat on the side table in the sitting area, eaten by not disposed of yet. It had gone silent around the offices of his mother’s, now partly his, design company quite a while ago, the cubicles and tables empty and strange in the fluorescent light while the windows grew dark.
When he finally noticed it, Trey paused looking over the design sketches he was reviewing to stare unseeing at them, all his focus on his ears.
Was that… his brother? It sounded like… music.
It was only belatedly, with a glance out the window, that Trey remembered how late it was and how, since he was still here, Cassian was probably still here as well. He should have told him to go home, but he’d been too focused on his work and too used to an assistant that knew how he liked things run. Not that that was any fault of his brother’s… but there was a lack of experience on that end that, sometimes, gave them issues like this. Cassian… it was still strange to call him that, after it took long enough to get used to Aelius.
But why was he playing music? Trey had never forbidden music, but it was strange anyway. And whatever it was, once he’d noticed it, he couldn’t NOT notice it. It was like some buzzing fly, pestering at him, until it finally drove Trey out of his chair.
“Cassian?” He called as he leaned to look around the door to his office, glancing up and down the sleek, white walls of the small lounge outside. There was a desk set up in there, and it was where his eyes went first, expecting to see his younger brother and some explanation for the music he could still hear.
Cassian didn’t mind the late nights when he had no other plans, and more often than not anymore, he had no plans. The most exciting thing in his life now were his dance classes. Waru was…well, he was scarce. That was likely the best way to describe the man right now. Cass was lucky to see hide or dread of that man and it bothered the dancer more than he let on. So, losing himself in work was a good escape.
He’d shuffled off from the main office area in search of some coffee and it wasn’t until he was returning, paper cup in hand, that he noted something…odd. At least, it seemed odd. While still very new to his position, he was fairly certain he’d never heard music in the office before. Pausing a moment in the hallway, he sipped at his black coffee while listening.
Trey was the only one here, and the music definitely seemed to be coming from that direction. Maybe he like listening to music when the office cleared out? That wouldn’t be an odd habit for anyone to pick up.
Returning to the main office space he caught the tail end of his name being called. “Sorry. I ran to get a coffee. Did you need something?” He popped into Trey’s office and brows furrowed as he realized instantly that the music was not coming from Trey’s office.
He turned and glanced back the way he came. He could still hear the music but it seemed to be coming from somewhere else now. Sure, sounds could bounce in odd ways, but the office wasn’t the most acoustically inclined space. “Huh. I thought we were the only ones still here.”
