Recently Donald Trump has banned transgender people from joining the military, as announced via tweet.

"After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.
Thank you"

I'd like to know what your take on this is, and ask that you try to remain as objective as possible.

Honestly! If a transgender person wants to join the military, than they should be allowed, I could understand if they weren't allowed if they had a serious medical condition, and speaking of medical... what does Trump mean by 'the tremendous medical costs'?

The US spends more on the military than most of the world combined.
There's only about 1500 transgender people in service, so the cost for their treatment is between 2.4 million and 8.4 million. Considering the Department of Defense's health care expenditure is around 50 billion dollars, that means transgenders are costing them only .0048% to .017% of the expenditure.
So it does seem very strange that he's try calling the cost "tremendous".

...-sighs- You know anyone who is able to and wants to should be allowed to join. I talked about this with my mom a few hours ago and one very important question if this is actually allowed to happen, (because my mom isn't even sure if this is legal or not and might possibility be stopped) what will happen to the transgenders already in the military?

I was wondering that too. Do they just get discharged after a certain amount of time? Have they been a problem before?
I dunno. I think if you're physically capable to do something you want to do for your country, you should be allowed to do it.

I'm interested in someone offering a counter-argument to make this make more sense, if possible.

I personally think gender/race should not be an issue with serving - even people with some medical issues - i am sorry but there could be a place SOMEWHERE - even an office if it helps them serve their country should be allowed .. maybe i am just too optimistic?

there was a controversy about people with religious issues/wardrobe ... personally i say set a different standard for them in the terms of rules then? it is hard because everyone does have a strict code to follow and how is it fair for some and not others? but this still does not even begin to touch on gender ...

he just likes to talk out of his butt onto twitter .... personally i think all social media should be shut off for the president - he spends more time tweeting and on vacation than he does running the country

Every potential inductee should be a case-by-case issue. It may be well and fine for some trans persons to hitch up, and not OK for others. Military life is not for everyone, regardless. And you have to follow dress code based on your genitals, so if someone is pre-op they must dress like others with what God gave them. With no draft in effect you really gotta want to be in the military or have no other options. It's not a middle-of-the road decision.

I personally agree with another member that if same sex or transgender wants to join the military they should be able to . I have nothing against either and feel like everyone should have a fair chance in life !
