The Meeting:

Hikaru wandered around the snowy streets with her hands in her pockets, eyes wandering to the pet stores around, sighing as she remembered the words her mother always told her. "No hunnie, I'm sorry...I just don't think we're ready to get another dog yet..." Sniffling a little bit, the brunette kicked at an ice ball that was in her way, muttering about how unfair things were. "But what about me...I miss my Heidi..." she pouted, suddenly looking up when she heard a bark that sounded rather close.

Looking for the source of the bark, her eyes fell upon a beautiful dog with brown fur and a beige underbelly, squealing in delight as the canine trotted towards her. Squatting down, she stayed deathly silent as she put her hand out slowly, allowing the beautiful creature to sniff her scent curiously, an absolutely gleeful expression coming over her face when the dog licked her hand tentatively. "You're really pretty, girl..." she said quietly as her hand was nuzzled with the top of the dog's head, she scratching the canine's ear contently.

"You kinda' remind of of Jenna from the movie Balto, too..." she giggled, continuing to pet the seeming stray happily, not caring if anybody saw her. "Maybe I'll be able to keep you...!" she exclaimed quietly, immediately beginning to think of ways to explain why she would have come home with a dog at her side.

Looking from one parent to the other, Hikaru grimaces at the looks they were giving her, the canine sitting behind her with a pout-ish look on her face. "Please mum?! She really did follow me home!" the girl exclaimed, giving them pleading looks. "I promise I'll take care of her!"

"Alright, alright..." her father replied, sighing as he squatted down and inspected the female without touching her, smiling slightly as he patted his daughter on the head. "You know...I think it's time you started taking up my old profession..." he mused, leading the pair towards the backyard and into the shed. Once inside, he showed them a sled perfect for a girl her age with a single harness on it. "This was mine when I was your age...and now, it's yours."

"Really?! You mean it?!" Hikaru exclaimed as she looked at Pika excitedly, throwing her arms around the dog with a squeal. "We're gonna' be the best sled team ever!!!"

Pika gave an excited yip when she figured out that she'd be able to stay with this nice human, liking the gentle scent that she carried.

"I'll leave you two alone then," her father told the pair, getting the sled out and showing his daughter how to help her new friend into the device.

"Com'on, Pika! Let's go to the race track and take a test run!" Hikaru exclaimed, getting the canine into the harness with an expert's ease. "We'll be the best! Just you and me!" she giggled, petting her friend before shoving her hat onto her head and opening the gate in the backyard...

...and thus started the adventure of Hikaru and her companion Pika.
